P199/2 Lyrics & meaning

What it’s about

A slow ballad sung as a prayer of thanks. The singer addresses her child as divine, her own flesh and bone, and says she would walk on the moon to get closer to the God who made it. In the chorus she tells God she does not know how he does it, that she is only trying to be human, and thanks him for choosing her to watch over "these babies". The second verse admits that the load sometimes gets too heavy, but says God gave her the strength and she will not be lonely again. The video shows one young woman with long brown hair singing into vintage microphones in a dark studio. The poster asks how this can be AI.

Names and terms

Dear God
The usual opening of a spoken prayer, and the title of many songs, among them XTC's 1986 single. Here it frames the whole song as a prayer of thanks.
Walk on the moon
Twelve astronauts walked on the moon during NASA's Apollo missions between 1969 and 1972. The singer uses it as the farthest she could go to be closer to the one who made her child.
Flesh and my bone
Echoes Genesis 2:23, where Adam calls Eve "bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh". In the song a parent says it of a child.
Divine
Of God or from God. The singer calls the child divine because God made it.
Watch over
In Christian prayer, God and guardian angels are said to watch over people. The song turns this around: God chose the singer to watch over her babies.

Dear God: lyrics

Verse 1If I could walk on the moon
I'd get a little bit closer
To the one who made you
'Cause you're divine
You're my flesh and my bone
And I'm always at home
When I'm with you alone
It feels like heaven

ChorusDear God, I don't know how you do it
I'm just trying to be human
Oh my God, I can't believe you chose me
To watch over these babies
Thank you, God

Verse 2And sometimes it gets heavy
And sometimes I can't carry it all
But you gave me the strength
I will never be lonely again, no

ChorusDear God, I don't know how you do it
I'm just trying to be human
Oh my God, I can't believe you chose me
To watch over these babies
Thank you, God

OutroOoh, ooh
Dear God
