P199/2 Lyrics & meaning

What it’s about

A tribute to the Bitcoin advocate American HODL, built from his own words: the post says an AI agent wrote the lyrics from transcripts of his interviews and talks, and a voice model makes the singer sound like him. The song follows his life story. As a boy he lent his computer to the search for aliens, as a young man he was a "loser libertarian", then he found Bitcoin. He calls inflation a theft of people's time, dismisses all other coins as scams, and urges saving for the future and for one's children. The bridge sees an iceberg coming and calls to build the boats, and the hook calls it manifest destiny. The video is a cinematic story from a childhood computer room to workshops and a family.

Names and terms

Manifest destiny
The 19th-century belief that the United States was destined to expand across North America, named in 1845 by the journalist John L. O'Sullivan. The song reuses it for building a new frontier with Bitcoin.
Dormant power to the sky (SETI@home)
SETI@home, run by the University of California, Berkeley from 1999, let volunteers lend their idle home computers to search radio telescope data for signals from aliens. The opening line fits it: the boy never found aliens, but searched together with strangers.
Seasteading
The idea of building permanent homes at sea, outside the reach of existing governments; the Seasteading Institute was founded in 2008. The singer wrote school papers about it, his "stupid ideas about the government".
Fiat land
Fiat money is government-issued currency not backed by a commodity such as gold. Bitcoiners use "fiat" for the traditional money system; the song says there it breeds learned helplessness and inflation.
Learned helplessness
A term from psychology, from Martin Seligman's experiments in the 1960s, for giving up after repeated lack of control. The song uses it for people asking the government for more money.
Shitcoins, except for one
Crypto slang for low-value tokens. The song calls all other coins scams except one, Bitcoin, and compares that view to monotheism.
Gold bugs
A name for investors who favor gold as protection against inflation. The song has them march in formation like redcoats while the Bitcoiners hide in the trees.

Manifest Destiny, Man: lyrics

Verse 1I was eleven, come home every day after school
Lend my computer's dormant power to the sky
Log on and ask it, oh my God, did I find aliens?
No, I never did
But me and all those strangers on the line
We were all looking for aliens together
In high school writing papers about seasteading
A friend said years later, and I laughed 'cause it was true
You didn't get here 'cause you're smart, man
You were a young man with stupid ideas about the government
I was a loser libertarian, a misanthrope for sport
Then I found the thing we've been waiting for
Now it has meaning and power behind it

ChorusMost of it's not for me
Most of it's not for me
Lodge it in the future
As far as you possibly can

Verse 2Out here in fiat land, it's learned helplessness
Please, government, send a little more my way
Money's just a proxy for human time
And they inflate mine from underneath me every day
Murder is the ultimate time theft
Slavery's a form of time theft
And this is just the subtle version of the same old crime
And the kids say fuck it, man, look for today
Buy shitcoins, get high on drugs made in a bathtub somewhere
Then die quick
Twenty-six thousand coins and literally all of them are scams
Except for one
It's kind of like monotheism, man
Show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser
A whole culture content to be losers
And a few of us refusing to lose

Verse 3I was thirty, coming out of the muck and mire
Gold bugs marching at the redcoats in lockstep formation
We were hiding in the trees
You can't play it their way
Build a parallel system, take back control
I retired on 6.15
Five of those are set aside for other people
They don't know it yet, I'm gonna surprise them
Nobody starts a family thinking, this is gonna suck
My kids are gonna be idiots, I'm gonna divorce my wife
Everything good starts with rational optimism
Then a seeding of time
And you harvest what you put into it at a later date

BridgeThey're stealing from younger generations
Borrowing from the future to paper over the problems in the present
But you can't just paper over a problem
It always comes back to you
We can see the iceberg hundreds of miles away
So rip up the benches, build the boats
Save as many people as you possibly can
Build the boats, build the boats, build the boats

Verse 4I want my kids to know that life is built by humans
Made by people no smarter than you are
I want to look my kids in the eye and say
I wasn't complicit, I wasn't complicit

HookThis is manifest destiny, man
Get off the couch, get off the couch
We're storming the frontier, building new structures, making our own way
You can just do shit, you can just do shit
You're not just a dude with one bitcoin
You're a fucking king with one bitcoin
Gifting more than we were given
Build the boats, build the boats
This is manifest destiny, man

ChorusMost of it's not for us
Most of it's not for us
Lodge it in the future
As far as you possibly can
Most of it's not for us
Most of it's not for us
Lodge it in the future
As far as you possibly can
As far as you possibly can

OutroI never found the aliens
But we were all looking together
Did I find them?
I never found the aliens
But we were all looking together
And I never found the aliens
