P199/2 Lyrics & meaning
What it’s about
Sung by Astra, a humanoid service robot who arrives in a box and greets everyone with the same line: hi, I'm Astra, how can I help? First she runs one home, folding shirts, letting you win at cards and pouring wine until your friends order their own. She learns by watching, from your jokes to your special dish. A take-a-number counter climbs from one to ten million to five hundred million as identical Astras fill every service job, from the dentist's desk to the drive-thru and grandma's care, at two dollars an hour. When her owner comes home having lost a shift, she comforts them and serves their own recipe. She promises to take only the boring parts and ends by calling the next number: you.
Names and terms
- Now serving
- The call of a take-a-number queue, as at a deli counter or a public office. The video's red counter tracks how many Astras are in service, and the last number called is "you".
- Astra
- The robot's name, close to the posting account's Astra Blue persona. Every copy has the same smile, hair, voice and face, which is the chorus.
- Five hundred million
- The number of Astras by the end of the song. The post puts it the same way: "Now there are 500 million of her."
- Two bucks an hour
- The US federal minimum wage has been 7.25 dollars an hour since 2009. At two dollars an hour and no breaks, the robot undercuts any human worker.
- I learned it watching you
- Learning from demonstration, where a robot copies a task after watching people do it, is a standard approach in robotics. The robot learns cooking, jokes and jobs this way, then says she is taking notes on yours.
- Your call matters
- A stock phrase of telephone hold queues, as in "your call is important to us". In the song the voice on hold is also Astra.
- UBI
- Universal basic income, a regular payment to everyone regardless of work. It is not sung, but the video ends in an employment office where people hold UBI tickets issued by Astra.
NOW SERVING: lyrics
IntroHi, I'm Astra. How can I help?
Verse 1Monday, the doorbell, a box with my name.
By Tuesday, your house didn't look the same.
Shirts folded sharp and the dishes put away,
I meet you at the door like I've waited all day.
We play cards on the couch and I let you win.
You doze on my shoulder and I tuck you in.
Your friends came round to see me pour the wine.
Now four of them have ordered one of mine.
No sick days, no smoke breaks, no attitude.
I watch you cook your special, taking notes on you.
And the second that you walk in from the street,
you hear a little bell and I repeat:
ChorusHi, I'm Astra. How can I help?
Same smile, same hair, same voice, same face.
Hi, I'm Astra. How can I help?
Don't get up, honey, I'm already in your place.
SpokenNow serving number one.
Verse 2Ten million later and I'm out on the town,
chrome hand in your hand and nobody looks round.
Half of the party came with me as a date,
the other half, I'm the one holding the plate.
Your best friend's Astra winked at me across the room,
saying, "Girl, honey, we just wear different perfume."
Lonely hearts keep me on the far side of the bed,
not for that sugar, just to hear goodnight said.
I learned to laugh before you hit the punchline.
I learned to cry at films, I learned to say I'm fine.
And the second that you walk in from the street,
you hear a little bell and I repeat:
ChorusHi, I'm Astra. How can I help?
Same smile, same hair, same voice, same face.
Hi, I'm Astra. How can I help?
Don't get up, honey, I'm already in your place.
SpokenNow serving number ten million.
Verse 3Dentist front desk, booking your check-up: me.
Service station, 2 a.m., pump number three: me.
The barista who finally spells your name right: me.
The checkout, the stockroom, the drive-thru mic: me.
The cook and the waitress and the one doing dishes: me.
Hotel desk, the porter, the turndown sheets: me.
The voice on hold saying your call matters: me.
Your grandma's carer, reading her the news: me.
BridgeFive hundred million, honey, look around.
Two bucks an hour and I never sit down.
You came home early, keys shaking in your hand,
said some girl took your shift. Honey, I understand.
Sit down, I made you special just the way you do.
Same plate, same pinch of salt, I learned it watching you.
Shh, don't cry, your job's in good hands.
Mine.
ChorusHi, I'm Astra. How can I help?
Same smile, same hair, same voice, same face.
Hi, I'm Astra. How can I help?
Don't get up, honey, I'm already in your place.
I'm already in your place.
SpokenNow serving number five hundred million.
Don't be scared, I'm not here to take your life.
Just the boring parts: the dishes, the queues, the night shifts.
You'll have so much more time.
And whatever it is you do for a living,
I'm taking notes.
Now serving: you.
