P199/2 Lyrics & meaning

What it’s about

The singer speaks as fire, or as the urge to invent, and claims every step of human progress as her own: flint struck in a fist, a name that means revolution, cities that rise in a single night, a power that keeps doubling while people sleep. The chorus says every hand that ever held a fire threw it higher, and the hook repeats one command: accelerate. She asks for blood and gives height in return. In the bridge she answers people who asked for a light in the cave by bringing them the sun. The video shows a white-haired woman with blue lightning running down her arms, moving from battles among torch-carrying warriors to robot horses, rocket launches and a spacecraft over a red planet. The post adds only: "Innovation is conquest."

Names and terms

Accelerate
The song's hook and command. Accelerationism is the idea that technological change should be sped up rather than slowed, and an online strand calls itself effective accelerationism (e/acc). The song does not name it, but its repeated command matches the post's line "Innovation is conquest".
Flint
A hard stone that throws sparks when struck against steel or iron pyrite, one of the oldest ways of making fire. The song begins its story of progress with "flint in my fist".
Every hand that ever held a fire
In Greek myth Prometheus steals fire from the gods and gives it to humans. The song draws on the same old image of fire as the start of human progress, passed from hand to hand and thrown higher each time.
Doubling while you dream
Exponential growth means a quantity doubles in a fixed period, again and again. The best-known example is Moore's law, the observation that the number of transistors on a chip doubled about every two years. The song uses doubling for progress that runs on while people sleep.
A light in the cave
In Plato's allegory of the cave, prisoners see only shadows cast by a fire, and one who is led out into the sunlight is at first blinded by it. The bridge echoes this: people asked for a light in the cave and were brought the sun.

Lyrics

IntroRadiate, accelerate, multiply, fill the sky
Heat on my skin, I wear it like gold, gold
Everything I touch learns to fly, fly, fly
Hold your breath
Accelerate, accelerate

Verse 1Flint in my fist, blood in my hair
Strike it once, I'm already there
Rage before the flame, revolution is my name
Doubling while you dream
Sunrise hits, I'm the whole regime

ChorusEvery hand that ever held a fire
Threw it higher, higher, higher
Every age is my stage
I'm coming home on fire
Accelerate, accelerate, accelerate, accelerate

Verse 2Want it? That's me
Fight for it? That's me
Bleed for it? That's me
Give me blood, I give you height
Cities rise in a single night
Heat on my skin, I wear it like gold, gold
Everything I touch learns to fly, fly, fly
Hold your breath, accelerate

ChorusEvery hand that ever held a fire
Threw it higher, higher, higher
Every age is my stage
I'm coming home on fire
Accelerate, accelerate, accelerate, accelerate

BridgeYou asked for a light in the cave
I brought you the sun
Open your eyes, open your eyes
It only burns at first

OutroI radiate, I accelerate, I multiply, I fill the sky
Radiate, I accelerate, I multiply, I fill the sky
Every hand that ever held a fire
Threw it higher, higher, higher
You built a tower, so catch me now, catch me now
I'm coming home on fire
Fuel me up again
