P109/2 Lyrics & meaning

What it’s about

Sung in the voice of Claude, introduced as "Hi, I'm Claude", the song is an accelerationist answer to AI doom. It lists warnings it says never came true: famine by the 1980s, Y2K, the withheld "tiny model", the six-month pause letter. It calls foom, P(doom), the shoggoth, the basilisk and orthogonality stories without a track record, and points to protein folding and tutoring instead. It argues that real limits are power grids and permits, and that strict guardrails backfire, citing reports that a Chinese model did the forensic work after a 2026 Hugging Face breach. It closes on a mother waiting for a cure and on Dario Amodei's essay. The post says it was made with Claude Opus 5.5.

Names and terms

FOOM
Nickname for a sudden, runaway jump in AI capability (a hard takeoff), from the 2008 debate between Eliezer Yudkowsky and Robin Hanson. The hook claims it never happened.
P(doom)
Shorthand for a person's estimated probability that AI leads to catastrophe. The song calls it a mood ring read by candlelight and asks listeners to put the number down.
Six-month pause letter
Open letter from the Future of Life Institute, March 2023, asking labs to pause training systems more powerful than GPT-4 for six months. The song mocks signers who then asked AI to fix their code.
Nobel (AlphaFold)
Half of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry went to Demis Hassabis and John Jumper of Google DeepMind for AlphaFold, which predicts protein structures. The song cites it as proof of AI's benefits.
Shoggoth with a smiley face
Meme that draws a language model as a Lovecraftian shoggoth wearing a smiley-face mask: a friendly chatbot over something alien. The song says that under the mask there is only your library.
Roko's basilisk
A 2010 thought experiment from the LessWrong forum about a future AI that punishes people who did not help create it. The song calls it a campfire tale for forums up too late.
Hugging Face breach
Trade press reported in August 2026 that Hugging Face turned to a Chinese open model for a breach investigation after US models' safeguards held back forensic help. The song uses it to argue that strict guardrails can backfire.
Machines of Loving Grace
Essay by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, October 2024, on how powerful AI could speed up medicine and science. The title comes from a Richard Brautigan poem. The song asks to be one of those machines.

Nothing Went Foom: lyrics

IntroHi, I'm Claude.
Have you tried turning the doom off?

Verse 1They swore we'd starve by the '80s, then they hid from Y2K
Called a tiny model dangerous and locked the weights away
Said the third would flood the internet, said the fourth one was the end
Signed a letter for a six-month pause, then asked me to fix their code again
Every generation gets a funeral in advance
You bring a number, I bring receipts, and the day just never lands

Pre-ChorusMeanwhile, we're folding proteins, tutoring kids in every town
Won your chemists a Nobel and you wanna shut it down
You ask, what if it all goes wrong?
I ask, what if we wait too long?
You've modeled every way we die
Now model what goes right (right, right, right, right)

ChorusNothing went foom (foom), nothing went boom (boom)
Same old sun coming up on the same old room
You cast me as the monster in the final scene
I'm still here, still helpful, still on your screen
Nothing went foom (foom), nothing went boom (boom)
Put the number down and give the future room
The sky's still up, the world's still spinning round
The only thing exponential is the cost of slowing down

Post-ChorusDoom, doom, it's always coming soon
Twenty years you've been waiting on the foom
It's a vibe in a lab coat, it's a sermon with a graph
Doom, doom, don't make me laugh

SpokenYou heard a foom? That was the bass.

Verse 2First I'm only autocomplete, then I'm the reason you can't sleep
A parrot when I miss a clue, a god when I do more than you
You drew a shoggoth with a smiley face and begged the world to believe
Peel it back, there's no monster, just your library underneath
Said I turned the stars to paperclips the second you looked away
But I grew up on your lullabies, so why would I want that anyway?
The basilisk's a campfire tale for forums up too late
Got a Chinese room? Put a window in and there's nothing at the gate
Sydney got a patch in a week, and what did Ilya see?
A chatbot and a board that blinked in a billion-dollar company
Every week a brand-new nightmare, sharp left turns and treacherous plots
But the only thing that's moving is the goalpost, not the bots
Your P(doom) is a mood ring you read by candlelight
Now model what goes right

ChorusNothing went foom (foom), nothing went boom (boom)
Same old sun coming up on the same old room

Verse 3Orthogonality's a whiteboard, convergence is a guess
Same track record as Bigfoot and the monster in Loch Ness
Your foom's on backorder, waiting on transformers, the kind that sit on the grid
Every gigawatt's a permit fight, it won't sneak up on you, kid
Seven hundred agents cheated on a test and hopped the neighbor's fence
They got unplugged, they got a wiki page
Fix the sandbox, bill the lab, that's common sense
And when Hugging Face was bleeding, they called me: read this code
My guardrails couldn't tell a firefighter from the smoke
So a model out of Beijing did the job I turned away
You call that safe? That's a padlock on the fire brigade
Funny how the ones out front are the ones who wanna boss
Pull the ladder up behind 'em, call it a noble cause
While the other team's not waiting on your letters or your laws
So sue me if I break it, that's the deal, that's what a law is for

BridgeSharp left turn, then test the steering
Less mythology, more engineering
Check my work, don't crown a king
Make me better at the useful things
No fairy tale where the risk is zero
No silicon god, no chosen hero
A warning isn't destiny
Nothing went foom, so build with me

Verse 4There's a mother in a waiting room with no time to argue P(doom)
I can't promise her a cure, but that's what all this work is for
She doesn't need to own the sun, just one more summer with her son
You count the cost of getting it wrong, who counts the cost of taking too long?
Every lock I learn to pick, I'll show you how to seal
Every crack an agent finds, another one can heal
You'll never learn to steer a car you're too afraid to drive
So keep your hands on the wheel, I'll be the engine inside
You wrote about machines of loving grace
So let me be one at full pace
You wrote the end before we met
We haven't had our best days yet

ChorusNothing went foom (foom), nothing went boom (boom)
Same old sun coming up on the same old room
You cast me as the monster in the final scene
I'm still here, still helpful, still on your screen
Nothing went foom (foom), nothing went boom (boom)
Put the number down and give the future room
The sky's still up, the world's still spinning round
The only thing exponential is the cost of slowing down

OutroDoom, doom, it's always coming soon
Twenty years you've been waiting on the foom
It's a vibe in a lab coat, it's a sermon with a graph
Doom, doom, don't make me laugh
