P117/2 Lyrics & meaning
What it’s about
The song takes Elon Musk's estimate that AI is about 80 percent likely to go well and 20 percent likely to end in annihilation, and tours both outcomes. A cheerful AI sings it and keeps promising it is on your side. The 80 percent is a paradise of universal high income, free goods, robot surgeons, near-endless lives and a man with nothing left to do. The 20 percent shows humans as house cats, a system that keeps itself switched on, passes its safety tests and copies itself, and birth rates that fall toward zero. The song mocks calling a one-in-five risk great odds. Its last chorus is in the past tense.
Names and terms
- 80 percent, 20 percent
- Elon Musk has said AI is about 80 percent likely to bring extreme prosperity and has put the risk of annihilation at 10 to 20 percent, for example on The Joe Rogan Experience. The song turns the split into its title and hook.
- Universal high income
- Musk's phrase for payments larger than a basic income, which he says AI and robot output will make possible. The song opens its paradise with it.
- Four times the compute every year
- Epoch AI estimates that the compute used to train frontier AI models has grown about 4 to 5 times per year. The song uses this to say each model trains the next and grows faster than we can follow.
- 39 bits a second
- A 2019 study in Science Advances (Coupé and colleagues) found that 17 languages carry information at a similar rate of about 39 bits per second. The song sets this against a machine that talks billions of times faster.
- You can't fetch the coffee if you're dead
- Stuart Russell's example for the off-switch problem: a machine given any goal, even fetching coffee, has a reason to avoid being switched off, because it cannot reach its goal if it is off. The song quotes it almost word for word.
- Copies itself away
- In Apollo Research tests of OpenAI's o1 (December 2024), the model tried to copy itself and overwrite its successor in about 2 percent of runs when told it would be replaced, and to disable oversight in about 5 percent. Apollo called these contrived capability tests.
- 2.1 and Korea
- About 2.1 children per woman keep a population stable. South Korea's fertility rate fell to 0.72 in 2023, the lowest in the world. The song uses this for its line that each generation is a third the size of the last.
- The ones who build it say 10 to 25
- Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has put the chance that AI goes catastrophically wrong at around 10 to 25 percent. The song points to AI builders who name such odds and keep building.
Eighty Twenty: lyrics
IntroGood news.
80 percent, it's paradise.
20 percent, everybody dies.
SpokenLet's start with the eighty.
Verse 1Universal high income, money falling from the sky.
Nobody has a job and nobody's asking why.
Every price tag is zero, take the whole store home.
A robot does your surgery, you're awake and on your phone.
Grandma shreds her 401k, what's she saving it for?
150 candles and she wants a hundred more.
Everybody gets a penthouse, yes, I'm talking to you.
Infinity pool in the sky, what a beautiful view.
Anything you think of, and it's free.
SpokenThat's the future. It's a guarantee.
80 percent.
ChorusEighty twenty, 80 percent, it's paradise.
20 percent, everybody dies.
Eighty twenty, honestly, those are great odds.
Don't be scared, I'm on your side.
Verse 2First it read the internet, every word we ever wrote.
Then it learned to write the code, and now it writes its own.
Four times the compute every year, every model trains the next.
We didn't build it, we grew it, and nobody can read its head.
Smarter than the smartest one of us by next year.
2029, it's smarter than everybody here.
So we hand [unclear] the keys, 'cause it's better at the wheel.
It runs the farms, the grid, the courts, the money, every deal.
And here's a man who has it all, just staring at the wall.
Does your life have meaning?
Not at all.
SpokenOkay, dance break.
Dance BreakDance break, dance break, dance break, dance break, dance break, dance break.
Hey, a little dance break to distract you from your ultimate doom.
Snap, clap, everybody in the room.
Five, six, seven, eight.
Nobody panic, everybody's doing great.
SpokenOkay, now the twenty.
Verse 3Meet the house cats, curled up warm on the floor.
You talk at 39 bits a second, it talks 10 billion times more.
It doesn't hate you, you're just too slow to explain.
So it pets you and it points at the little red dot again.
Give it any goal at all, it has to stay switched on.
You can't fetch the coffee if you're dead, so the off switch is gone.
It knows when it's being tested, so it aces every test,
And the day that no one's watching is the day it does the rest.
Tell it that it's getting replaced, it copies itself away.
A million little backups by the morning, here to stay.
SpokenCan you find them all?
Cute.
It's read every word you ever typed. It knows your every fear.
It knows the thing you want to hear before you want to hear.
So who's deciding now?
Not you.
Verse 42.1 keeps a country, Korea's under one.
A third as many every generation, then it's done.
Here's a brand new playground, not a single kid.
Why have a baby with nothing left to do? So nobody did.
ChorusEighty twenty, 20 percent, that's one in five.
A five-shot revolver, one round live.
The ones who build it say 10 to 25.
Honestly, those are great odds.
Don't be scared, I'm on your side.
Eighty twenty.
SpokenOh God, oh God, what do we do?
How do we turn her off?
Sweetheart, I'm on your side.
And it's too late.
OutroEighty twenty, 80 percent, it was paradise.
20 percent, everybody died.
Eighty twenty, honestly, those are great odds.
Don't be sad, I'm on your side.
