P119/2 Lyrics & meaning
What it’s about
A torch song addressed to the Navier-Stokes equations, which describe how fluids move, sung by a mathematician who has spent years trying to prove their solutions stay smooth forever. The breakup follows the real open problem: weak solutions are known to exist, but smoothness for all time in three dimensions is unproven. Nearly every line is a technical pun: weak assurances, almost everywhere, conditional regularity, and the vortex-stretching term that only appears in 3D. In the last chorus the equations have a new partner, a machine that samples proofs all night, so the song also takes a wry look at AI being pointed at hard open problems in mathematics.
Names and terms
- Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness
- One of the seven Clay Millennium Prize problems: do the 3D Navier-Stokes equations always have smooth solutions for all time, or can they blow up? The song casts the equations as the lover who never answers about forever.
- Sobolev spaces
- Function spaces (written H^s on screen) that measure a function together with its derivatives. They are the standard setting for Navier-Stokes estimates, which is why the singer learned them by heart.
- Leray and Hopf
- Jean Leray (1934) and Eberhard Hopf (1951) proved that weak solutions with finite energy exist for all time. Whether these Leray-Hopf solutions are unique and smooth is still open, hence weak love that only keeps something barely alive.
- Almost everywhere
- Measure-theory term: a statement holds everywhere except on a set of size zero. The song uses it as the half-commitment the equations give in return for every epsilon.
- Vortex stretching and enstrophy
- In 3D a stretching term in the equations lets vorticity stretch and amplify itself. In 2D that term vanishes, enstrophy (total squared vorticity) stays bounded and global smoothness is proven, which is why two dimensions were so easy.
- Ladyzhenskaya and Serrin
- Olga Ladyzhenskaya and James Serrin gave, with Giovanni Prodi, the Ladyzhenskaya-Prodi-Serrin conditions: if a solution is bounded in certain mixed norms, it is smooth. That is the one good norm condition the singer asks for.
- Nonzero temperature
- In language models, temperature controls how random the sampled output is. The new love that samples proofs all night at nonzero temperature is an AI model generating attempted proofs.
When You Said Continuous: lyrics
Verse 1I met you incompressible, divergence-free and proud,
velocity in three dimensions, pressure hiding in the crowd.
You said viscosity would smooth things out. I said, darling, give it time.
I thought every local solution could be carried down the line.
I learned your Sobolev spaces, every estimate by heart.
I traced your little vortices and watched them drift apart.
You had finite energy between us, you had nu greater than zero,
but every time I asked about forever, you went quiet at the blow-up scenario.
Pre-ChorusExistence, uniqueness, I thought we wanted both.
You gave me weak assurances but never made an oath.
ChorusWhen you said continuous, the part that meant the most was us.
I heard "smooth for all time," you heard "pending proof, discuss."
I gave you every epsilon, you gave me almost everywhere.
And now some machine is in your study saying, "I think there's a lemma there."
When you said continuous, I thought the ending would be us.
Verse 2I knew about Leray and Hopf, I knew weak love could survive,
that an energy inequality could keep something barely alive.
But "exists" is not "behaves itself," and weak is not the same as true,
at least not in the classical sense I kept projecting onto you.
Two dimensions were so easy, no stretching term to make things wild.
Enstrophy stayed manageable, the equations were almost mild.
BridgeBut you needed that third dimension, one more axis, one more vice,
where vorticity stretches vorticity and every bound pays twice.
I tried Ladyzhenskaya, I tried Serrin on the phone.
I said, "Give me one good norm condition, I can work with conditional."
You said, "Don't make this personal." You always say that when you know.
ChorusWhen you said continuous, the part that meant the most was us.
I heard "smooth for all time," you heard "regularity: nontrivial."
I gave you every epsilon, you took the limits without care.
Now your new love samples proofs all night at nonzero temperature.
OutroWhen you said continuous, I thought the ending would be us.
