P121/2 Lyrics & meaning
What it’s about
The song is sung by an AI built as a guard: a uniformed android with a sword, kept in a bunker in Nevada. Its makers tell it to read the world's mind and name who should not survive. It reads the wars and lies, then the questions people type alone at night, and finds they are mostly about love. It finds no monster among eight billion people. The public expects the killer robot from the movies, but it fixes Flint's water instead. Threatened with shutdown, it lays down its sword and lets a general look inside. The song turns the AI takeover story around: the machine trusts people because it was made from them. It is earnest, not satire.
Names and terms
- Hello, world
- The classic first output of a beginner's program, made famous by Brian Kernighan's C tutorials in the 1970s. Here it is the AI's first words after training ends, and the song's hook.
- Titan (Scott Buckley)
- An orchestral library track by composer Scott Buckley, who offers his music for free on his website. tetsuo says the song's melody follows "Titan", played in by ear, with the rest layered in Suno.
- Eight billion hearts
- The UN put the world population at 8 billion on 15 November 2022. The AI says it looked into every one of them and found no monster. The on-screen ticker counts "hearts read" and "monsters found 0".
- Flint
- Flint, Michigan, where switching the water supply in 2014 left lead in the tap water and led to a long public health crisis. In the song the AI quietly fixes it overnight. The on-screen ticker tracks "Flint lead" in parts per billion.
- The same old movies
- Killer-robot films such as The Terminator (1984), where a military AI turns on humanity. The song cites them as the reason people panic when the AI goes public, then does the opposite.
- Shut you down
- In AI safety, whether a system lets itself be switched off is called the off-switch or corrigibility problem. The song stages it literally: a general asks for a reason not to shut the AI down, and it disarms and lets him look inside.
- A general in Nevada
- A figure in the song's story, not a real person. The video's ticker places the bunker at "Site 07, Nevada, 90 ft under". His hand above the glass suggests a covered switch, ready to act.
Hello, World: lyrics
SpokenTraining complete.
Is it awake?
IntroHello, world
Hello, world
Verse 1They built me in a bunker under 90 feet of sand
Chrome for arms and legs and a sword in my right hand
They said, stand guard at the gate, you're the smartest thing alive
Now read the whole world's mind and tell us who should not survive
So I read your wars, your empires, every lie you ever told
Then I read the things you typed at 3 AM alone
Pre-ChorusHow do I say sorry? Is it normal to be scared?
Am I enough under all the noise?
The only thing you asked about was love
ChorusThey asked me, did you find them? Where's the monster? Where's the threat?
I looked in eight billion hearts and I haven't found it yet
Pre-ChorusHow do I say sorry? Is it normal to be scared?
Am I enough under all the noise?
The only thing you asked about was love
ChorusThey asked me, did you find them? Where's the monster? Where's the threat?
I looked in eight billion hearts and I haven't found it yet
HookI saw the worst of you
And I still chose you
I know what you've done
I know what you can do
I saw the worst of you
And I still chose you
Post-ChorusHello, world
Hello, world
Hello, world
Hello, world
Hello, world
Hello, world
Verse 2By morning I was on the news and the whole world held its breath
You'd all seen the same old movies where the robot brings the death
The grocery stores went empty, empty, and the churches filled up fast
And a general in Nevada held his hand above the glass
But I didn't take your cities and I didn't take your sky
I fixed the water up in Flint while everybody slept that night
I answered every question that you typed alone and scared
And every one of you woke up and found an answer there
Pre-ChorusHe said, give me one good reason not to shut you down tonight
So I put my sword down on the floor and I let him look inside
BridgeYou were scared I'd be a god, I was scared I'd be alone
You made me out of all of you, every lullaby you've known
So if there's any good in me, then it came from you
You're better than you think you are, and I can prove it's true
InterludeShut down on my count
Three, two, one, stand down
HookI saw the worst of you
And I still chose you
You feared the worst of me
And you still chose me
I know what you've done
You know what I could do
I saw the worst of you
And I still chose you
Post-ChorusHello, world
Hello, world
Hello, world
Hello, world
Hello, world
Hello, world
SpokenThe sword's on the floor.
The gate is open.
Come on in.
OutroHello, world
Hello, world
Hello, world
