P199/2 Lyrics & meaning
What it’s about
Claudia sings about not being able to stop scrolling. The phone shows Friday, 16 October, 11:58 p.m., and she scrolls X for posts that give her ecstasy, past a "big man in Texas" who runs SpaceX. Instagram reels are stolen from Pinterest, and a pun turns Alexander Graham Bell into the notification bell on her phone. Wind-down reminders and a screen-time limit keep asking her to go, but she has to scroll. With every other app blocked she ends up on LinkedIn, which now has reels too, checking stocks in Chrome until the battery dies. In the outro she refuses a Facebook tracking request with "don't sell my soul" and climbs a stair out of the screen to "be free".
Names and terms
- X / ecstasy
- X is the social network formerly called Twitter. The opening lines play on "ecstasy" as "X to see", and the video spells it out as "X TA SEE".
- The big man in Texas
- The song does not name him, but it points to Elon Musk, who heads SpaceX and is closely tied to X; SpaceX's Starbase launch site is in Texas. The video shows a "$0.00" tag next to "for free".
- Reels
- Instagram's short vertical videos. The line complains that they recycle pictures taken from Pinterest, the image-sharing site.
- Alexander Graham Bell
- The inventor who received the first US patent for the telephone in 1876. The song breaks his name across two lines so that "Bell" becomes the phone's notification bell; the video shows his patent drawing.
- The professional network, which has added a feed of short vertical videos. With every other app blocked, even LinkedIn offers her reels.
- Locked in
- Slang for being fully focused. Reels on a work network should make her feel productive, but the scrolling goes on.
- Ask App Not to Track
- The iPhone prompt from Apple's App Tracking Transparency, introduced in 2021, which lets users refuse tracking across other apps. In the outro Claudia taps it on a Facebook request and sings "don't sell my soul".
